POP UP Lab & Shop
of traditional Kyoto products

Kyoto is one of the richest cultural centers of Japan as it was the old capital for more than a thousand years. Japanese emperors who resided in Kyoto during this period invested extensively in the traditional Japanese crafts which is the reason why up until this day the city still remains the home of many traditional companies that make a diverse range of high quality products with outstanding techniques.

MAKER KAMER is a project founded in Amsterdam where traditional products from Kyoto and Dutch creativity can meet through various activities in our 'pop-up laboratory'. Here we introduce people to the traditional products of Kyoto, and Japanese craftsmen can show and teach in workshops how they are made. In addition we created a platform where, in collaboration with museums in Europe, new products inspired by traditional Japanese techniques can explored. Through these activities, we offer opportunities for creatives from both Europe and Japan to exchange ideas and skills in order to learn from and inspire each another. This resulted, thanks to the feedback from local creators and visitors, successfully in the development of a number of new products after the first pop-up laboratory in 2016.

This year we will expand our activities beyond Amsterdam by opening the way for eleven long-established companies from Kyoto to a large number of different cities in Europe. Again our aim is to support the development of new products which combine traditional techniques and skills from Japan with the lifestyle and creativity of Europe. For we believe that the richness that traditional crafts have to offer complements the quality of living everywhere.
